TOPIC: OIL FOR THE LAMP

TEXT: LEVITICUS 24:1-9 (KJV)

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamps to burn continually.

3 Without the vail of the testimony, in the tabernacle of the congregation, shall Aaron order it from the evening unto the morning before the LORD continually: it shall be a statute for ever in your generations.

4 He shall order the lamps upon the pure candlestick before the LORD continually.

5 And thou shalt take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof: two tenth deals shall be in one cake.

6 And thou shalt set them in two rows, six on a row, upon the pure table before the LORD.

7 And thou shalt put pure frankincense upon each row, that it may be on the bread for a memorial, even an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

8 Every sabbath he shall set it in order before the LORD continually, being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant.

9 And it shall be Aaron’s and his sons’; and they shall eat it in the holy place: for it is most holy unto him of the offerings of the LORD made by fire by a perpetual statute.

KEY VERSE: 

“Command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamps to burn continually.” – (Leviticus 24:2)

MESSAGE:

On a Wednesday night, five members of a family were having devotion in their living room. All of a sudden, there was power outage. While the elder son was pleading with his father to put on the generator, the younger one was screaming. 

Amid the plea and scream, their father went upstairs and brought a rechargeable lamp. Immediately the man put on the lamp, there was much relief, and they continued their devotion.

Our text centres on God’s directive to the Israelites to provide “pure olive oil beaten for the light.” The purpose was to keep the lamps on the tabernacle of the congregation burning. 

He described how the lamps should be arranged upon the candlestick outside the veil in the tabernacle. He, also, directed them to “take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof… And set them in two rows… upon the pure table before the LORD…”

This account is more explicit in Matthew 5:13-15. Jesus Christ is the Light of the world. 

He gave us light when He came to the world. While the lamps symbolise the ministers of God and every true Christian, the candlestick represent the Church of Christ. The lamps of Christ in the world are to be kept burning by the pure, sacred and undiluted oil of the word of God.

As believers, we represent Christ on the earth and should reflect His light before the world of sinners. But we cannot reflect His light sufficiently if we cannot feed on God’s word. 

To keep burning, therefore, we must consciously read and study His Word daily, take the gospel of Light to the world of darkness and earnestly pray for their conversion. 

We must not retreat to our privacy and obscurity under pretence of modesty or self-preservation. Rather, we must be a shining light to others for the conversion, comfort and direction of their souls.

TOPIC: THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES

TEXT: LEVITICUS 23:33-44

33. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

34. Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the LORD.

35. On the first day shall be an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work therein.

36. Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD; on the eighth day shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD; it is a solemn assembly; and ye shall do no servile work therein.

37. These are the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD, a burnt offering, and a meat offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, every thing upon his day;

38. Beside the sabbaths of the LORD, and beside your gifts, and beside all your vows, and beside all your freewill offerings, which ye give unto the LORD.

39. Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days; on the first day shall be a sabbath, I and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath.

40. And ye shall take you on the first day the boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and ye shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days.

41. And ye shall keep it a feast unto the LORD seven days in the year. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations; ye shall celebrate it in the seventh month.

42. Ye shall dwell in booths seven days; all that are Israelites born shall dwell in booths;

43. That your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt; I am the LORD your God.

44. And Moses declared unto the children of Israel the feasts of the LORD.

KEY VERSE:

“Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the LORD.” – (Leviticus 23:34)

MESSAGE:

The children of Israel departed from Egypt, the land of bondage, with the intent of settling in the Promised Land. But they could not possess Canaan until 40 years after. While wandering in the wilderness, God’s faithfulness never ceased from them. 

Even when some of them disobeyed Him and few nations rose against them, God kept directing, guiding and protecting them until He brought them into Canaan. He was with them as the Pillar of cloud in the day and as the Pillar of fire at night.

As revealed in our text, God established the feast of Tabernacles, which He commanded to hold on the fifteenth day of the seventh month annually. Also, He commanded them to put up booths and dwell therein for seven days during the celebration. 

The purpose of the feast was to enable the Israelies to commemorate God’s protection during their journey through the wilderness; renew their commitment to God and trust the God of their fathers evermore. It usually involved the whole family so as to acquaint the younger generation with God’s faithfulness to their fathers.

As Christians, we have come out of Egypt of sin and are journeying through the wilderness of this world to the heavenly Canaan. 

It is certain that the world will be hostile to us. Nevertheless, we must be courageous and strong, knowing full well that we have a mighty Captain in Christ our Lord, who never falters or fails.

The Scripture assures us that Christ is ever present with us. He often intercedes for our security and preservation from the pollution of the world. Although iniquity may abound and the love of many wax cold, we must continue to hold on to our steadfast Anchor. He is able to save everyone that comes to Him till the end. This assurance of God’s faithfulness and love should also be inculcated into our offspring so that together we shall enter the heavenly Canaan.

TOPIC: THE ATONEMENT

TEXT: LEVITICUS 23:23-32

23. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

24. Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation.

25. Ye shall do no servile work therein; but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

26. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

27. Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement; it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

28. And ye shall do no work in that same day; for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God.

29. For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.

30. And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people.

31. Ye shall do no manner of work; it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

32. It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls; in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.

KEY VERSE:

“And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God.” – (Leviticus 23:28)

MESSAGE:

At 13, Dominic MacAulay wrote a poem titled Sin and Redemption. The poem was part of his home school curriculum. In part, the poem read: “When the universe began, in His image, God made a woman and a man. Dominion was given them, over all the land. But one snake named Satan came to get those people to sin in shame. Thus the world fell; thousands of years later, one was sent: the longed-for Saviour. The Messiah name was Jesus… he died on a terrible cross, thus my redemption paid…”

This poem captures the whole essence of the sacrifice of Christ our Saviour. 

In theology, atonement represents the reconciliation of God that mankind accomplished through the life, suffering and crucifixion of Christ our Lord. By implication, outside Christ, no other atonement can guarantee our redemption.

In Israel, as shown in our text, a day was set apart when the high priest would enter into the holy of holies to make sacrifice for the sin of the people and the nation. This is referred as the day of atonement. The Israelites observed it yearly. The day of atonement was a shadow of the better testament. Jesus Christ is the sacrificial Lamb crucified for the sin of humanity. 

He offered Himself as the perfect Lamb for atonement. His sacrifice was final, and we no longer require any other sacrifice again. By His own blood, Jesus Christ entered once into the holy place to obtain eternal redemption for you and me.

From time to time, the redeemed of the Lord need to soberly reflect on this and appreciate Christ’s inexplicable love. He voluntarily went through emotional trauma of abandonment by the Father, excruciating pain of torture, and the most humiliating, debasing and shameful death on the cross for our redemption. 

If sin is still having dominion over you, do not delay any longer. Rather, humbly surrender your life and appropriate the benefits of the final atonement into your life.

11. And he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted for you; on the morrow after the sabbath the priest shall wave it.

12. And ye shall offer that day when ye wave the sheaf an he lamb without blemish of the first year for a burnt offering unto the LORD.

13. And the meat offering thereof shall be two tenth deals of fine flour mingled with oil, an offering made by fire unto the LORD for a sweet savour; and the drink offering thereof shall be of wine, the fourth part of an hin.

DCLM DAILY MANNA 8TH DECEMBER 2020 DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE:

Naomi and her daughter-in-law, Ruth, had just returned from Moab after losing virtually everything. In Bethlehem Judah, then, they were equivalent to the needy and strangers. Ruth, the Moabites, had to glean in the field of Boaz to meet her basic needs and that of her mother-in-law (Ruth 2:1-3).

God had this group of people in mind when He instructed the Israelites to always leave the corners of their field ‘unharvested’ and any gleaning of their harvest ‘ungathered’ for the poor and strangers. 

In Leviticus 19:9,10, specifically, the Lord God affirms: “when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest… thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger”.

From our text today, two feasts of holy convocation stand out. The first relates the feast of the first fruits, which also denotes the offering of the first crops harvested in a year. The second is the feast of Pentecost, which signifies thanksgiving and joy over bountiful harvest. Each of these feasts involves harvesting of crops and God’s directive was that the corner of the field and any gleaning of the harvest should be left for the needy for there would always be poor people in the land.

The children of Israel could not eat crops of their harvest until they had offered the first fruits. Today, God expects us to do the same. He expects that all His children set aside His portion first. He expects that we give Him the first place in our heart and in the form of freewill offerings, tithes, and giving for church projects.

Aside, God expects that we make provision for the needy in the church. Believers must therefore honour this age-long directive of God, especially to those of the household of faith.

TEXT: LEVITICUS 23:1-8

2. Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.

3. Six days shall work be done; but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein; it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.

4. These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.

5. In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD’S passover.

6. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD; seven days ye must eat unleavened bread.

7. In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work therein.

DCLM DAILY MANNA 7TH DECEMBER 2020 DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE:

Having perfected the redemptive work for mankind through His crucifixion, Jesus Christ appointed the New Testament Sabbath to be a holy convocation. 

Also, He met His disciples on the first day of the week after His resurrection (Matthew 28:1,10).

Besides the Sabbath of rest meant to be a continual ordinance in Israel, there were other forms of feasts God asked the Israelites to observe as holy convocations. 

These were special days and seasons set aside for them to come together in remembrance of the great wonders God performed to deliver them from the land of bondage. 

The feast of Passover, for instance, was celebrated to mark the day God “smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt” without touching the house of Israel. It reminded them of God’s mighty works. 

Also, the feast of unleavened bread reminded the Israelites of their freedom from Egypt. It used to take seven days of celebration. 

There were the feasts of first fruits, Pentecost, trumpets, the Day of Atonement and the feast of Tabernacles.

God equally commanded the Israelites to sanctify these days and seasons of feast and to do no regular work in them. Likewise, Jesus Christ, the Lord of the Sabbath, sanctified the first day of the week as the Sabbath of holy convocation for believers under the dispensation of grace. God has also used His holy servants to set aside days and seasons of congregating together before the Lord.

Believers must bear in mind that the Sabbath and other times of services are meant to worship God our Creator so that we can be nourished and refreshed in His word and presence. 

In Hebrews 10:25, we are urged not to forsake “the assembling of ourselves together” for it helps us to be alive spiritually till the day of the Lord.

TEXT: PROVERBS 26:1-19
1. As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.

2. As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.

3. A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool’s back.

4. Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

5. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

6. He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage.

7. The legs of the lame are not equal; so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

KEY VERSE:
“The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth.” – (Proverbs 26:15)

MESSAGE:
Charles H. Spurgeon, an English Baptist preacher, preached a sermon at the Metropolitan Tabernacle, Newington on June 3, 1888. The sermon was titled “The Sluggard’s Farm.” He cited Proverbs 24:30-32 to illustrate how King Solomon laid down his robe on a particular day and walked through his kingdom. At a point, he saw the broken wall of a little estate, which comprised a piece of ploughed land and a vineyard. At a glance, the king came to the conclusion that a sluggard owned and neglected the estate because weeds had covered all the face of the ground.

Our text gives a graphic description of the slothful. A slothful person often dreams of and pretends to dread a lion each time he is asked to diligently carry out his assignment. He can give millions of excuses to justify his laziness. He sometimes imagines and portrays difficult situations he cannot grapple with. As a result, he always hides his hands in his bosom and finds it difficult to feed himself. This is a folly that frightens him from the real purpose of existence. But in Genesis 2:15, God “took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.” God Himself worked six days unstopped to create the earth and everything in it.

In this light, we must always remember that we are created in God’s image and likeness. God is diligent and industrious. As His reflection, therefore, we must work and not be indolent for any reason. If you are already caught in the web of slothfulness, you can overcome it. Take a step forward today; set achievable goals; pursue them with vigour and pray for God’s strength.

TEXT: Proverbs 25:16-28
16. Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

17. Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour’s house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee.

18. A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

19. Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.

KEY VERSE:
“If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.” – (Proverbs 25:21,22)

MESSAGE:

The law of a tooth for tooth and an eye for eye prevailed in the mosaic laws. The wrongdoer was then seen as an enemy that needed to be paid back in his own coin. He was not to be shown any forgiveness or any kind of consideration. He must be made to suffer for the ill he has done.

However, in the New Testament, the standard is higher. This was what Christ came to teach and propagate in His earthly ministry, when He said, “Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven… For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?” (Matthew 5:43-47).

When a believer suffers unjustly, instead of reacting in bitterness and anger, he should treat the wrongdoer as a friend. In this way, the believer, through his clemency and forgiveness, proves his Christ-mindedness, love and maturity over the offender. This may make the wrongdoer ashamed, and may lead to repentance and a change of his evil ways. When a wronged believer behaves like this, the word of God says “coals of fire” are being heaped on the offender. A believer is not to avenge himself. Since vengeance belongs to God, believers are to bless and pray for those who persecute them (Romans 12:18-21).

Believers need to possess the mind of Christ. Christ Himself prayed for those who crucified Him on the cross. We must follow the example of the Master because “it is enough for the disciple that he be as his master”.

Love and forgiveness will enhance God’s purpose for the sinner’s repentance.

21. My son, fear thou the LORD and the king; and meddle not with them that are given to change;

22. For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?

23. These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.

24. He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him;

25. But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.

26. Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer.

27. Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.

Laziness is a clear demonstration of foolishness and stupidity. When an individual sleeps when he is expected to be working, he will surely come to poverty, disgrace and despicable treatment by the neighbours.

Apart from giving admonition on good conduct of citizens in a society, our text counsels against idleness, slothfulness and laziness. Likewise, Proverbs 10:4 says, “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.”

Some people spend their time in unprofitable gossip and tale-bearing instead of engaging in profitable enterprises. Laziness brings embarrassment, disgrace and sorrow to a person. 

It brings reproach to God and shame to the relations and acquaintances. A lazy person loses respect and self-dignity. He does not receive honour from anyone. 

It is needful for everyone to seek and acquire some skill with which to be gainfully employed. If he has gone to school, he should prayerfully seek a good employment. With the help of God, even when things seem tough, he can still get a good job.

Every believer, therefore, needs to work hard to be able to feed his family, give for God’s work and help others so as to lift up the glory of God. God hates laziness and wants all His people to be busy doing something useful. 

True salvation through Christ and a close walk with Him will enhance the progress of such a believer “for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth…” (Deuteronomy 8:18).

TOPIC: POSSESSING THE MIND OF CHRIST

TEXT: PROVERBS 24:1-20

1. Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.

2. For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.

3. Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established;

4. And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

5. A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.

6. For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war; and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.

7. Wisdom is too high for a fool; he openeth not his mouth in the gate.

8. He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.

9. The thought of foolishness is sin; and the scorner is an abomination to men.

10. If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.

11. If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain;

15. Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place;

16. For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again; but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

17. Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth;

18. Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.

19. Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked;

20. For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.

KEY VERSE:

“Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth.” – (Proverbs 24:17)

MESSAGE:

One of the greatest virtues of a believer as enunciated by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in the New Testament is the principle of non-retaliation. 

Retaliation may be by direct vengeance or sometimes by indirect method of rejoicing when evil befalls one’s perceived enemy. It may also be by wishing someone, who has offended us, evil.

The text under consideration today teaches believers true wisdom and its benefits. It is evil for a Christian to go on a mission of vendetta. It is wisdom for a believer not to revenge or retaliate directly or indirectly. Neither should he rejoice when his enemy falls.

The pleasure some people derive from the calamities and misfortunes of their perceived enemy is forbidden by God. 

When a believer has a true knowledge of the word of God, his heart will be filled with the grace and comfort of the Holy Ghost, which will not allow him to do evil or imagine evil. 

The Spirit of God will make him to be at peace with everyone, including the wicked enemies, at all times.

Only people with Christ’s mind will neither revenge nor imagine evil when calamities befall their enemies. 

Christ’s mind can only be possessed through the new birth. The new birth comes upon a sinner when he acknowledges his/her sinfulness, confesses them and makes Christ his/her Lord and Saviour. 

This will make the grace of God to flood his heart. He will not be able to retaliate or rejoice when evil befalls his enemies.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

Heart circumcision is the answer.

TOPIC: A FATHERLY COUNSEL

TEXT: PROVERBS 23:26-35

26. My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

27. For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

28. She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

29. Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

30. They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

31. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

32. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

33. Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

34. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

35. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not; when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

KEY VERSE:

“My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.” – (Proverbs 23:26)

MESSAGE:

There are two things that easily bring a man to disgrace and reproach. These are immorality and drunkenness. Many have suffered humiliation and avoidable embarrassment due to adultery, fornication and alcohol.

Our text is the plea of our Father in heaven to all His children to give Him their hearts and to let their eyes observe His ways. 

A man or woman that gives God their heart and allows their eyes to observe God’s ways will never fall into such reproach and disgrace.

Whoever is a drunkard will invariably behold strange things as well as strange women and his heart will brew perverse things. 

Drunkenness made Noah’s son, Ham, to see his father’s nakedness (Genesis 9:21,22). Lot’s drunkenness made him commit incest with his two daughters (Genesis 19:33-35). 

It was a life of immorality that made Reuben the first born of Jacob to receive a curse instead of blessing from his father.

Adultery and drunkenness do not only bring sorrow, regrets, troubles, physical injury, bad health and of course shame to their captives, they also result in embarrassment and reproach to the spouse, children, relations and friends. 

Drunkenness affects a person’s stomach, eyesight, mind and speech and makes the ability to walk and do the right things difficult. The brain cannot be properly coordinated; hence, one begins to act foolishly and senselessly.

To avoid these calamities in one’s life, one needs to take heed to scriptural counsel through forsaking of all evil ways and sinful lifestyle, repenting of every known sin, asking God for forgiveness and inviting Jesus into one’s heart. 

Jesus remains the only permanent cure to these evil habits. Surrender your life to Him today.
